Love Island's Ovie Soko explains reason he said 'message' when islanders got a text

Love Island's Ovie Soko has finally explained why he yelled 'message' whenever islanders got a text.

The basketball pro became synonymous with the catchphrase while in the Mallorca villa, piping up as soon as one of his fellow cast-members shouted: "I've got a text!"

Now, he has explained that he was actually inspired by a 90s movie.

Speaking to OK! online, the reality star said: "I used to watch a lot of comedies when I was younger.

"There was one… Don’t Be A Menace? It was like a comedy I watched when I was younger, and it just stuck in my head.

"As soon as the phone rang… I really didn’t think anything of it to be fair!"

Ovie was referencing the 1996 Wayans Brothers film, called Don’t Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood.

In the movie, Keenen Wayans emerges every time somebody has learnt a lesson, and shouts 'message' in a similar fashion.

Ovie came in third place with India (ITV/REX)

During the grand finale, Ovie came in third place alongside his love interest India Reynolds.

Before her arrival, fans became so infatuated with the hunky star that they even petitioned for him to win the show on his own, pleading with producers to change the rules.

However, women across the country will be devastated to hear that the sporting pro is still very much devoted to India on the outside world.

"I feel like we’ve set a pretty good foundation," he added.

Ovie became a firm favourite in the villa (ITV)

"We spoke about it a lot – in today’s society everyone’s always on their phones, everything is 200 miles an hour…

"But we’ve gone two weeks to have a lot of conversations face to face, and to get to know each other."
