Love Island's Mike Boateng: What Greater Manchester Police will and won't say about racism allegations

Greater Manchester Police say five officers have been 'dealt with' after Love Island's Mike Boateng - a former PC with the force - alleged he had been 'subjected to racist behaviour during his initial training'.

A separate investigation into allegations made regarding Mr Boateng himself is ongoing, the force confirmed.

Mr Boateng is currently starring in the winter series of the hit reality show, which began earlier this month.

He was introduced on ITV programme as a 'police officer from London'.

It later emerged that Mr Boateng - originally from the south east, but who moved to Bury - actually worked for GMP for just under three years, but quit the force before filming began.

In a statement over the weekend, Mr Boateng's team said on his social media account that 'false' stories about his time in the force were about to be published and moved to rebut them.

They also said claimed he was 'subject to discrimination' during his time in the force.

Now a spokesperson for GMP has confirmed a complaint of 'racist behaviour' was made and that five officers were 'dealt with' as a result.

However, the force refused to say what action, if any, was taken against the five.

Disciplinary proceedings can result in redeployment, a reduction in rank, an 'improvement notice' or dismissal if an officer is found to have done wrong. No action is taken if a case is 'not proven'.

A GMP statement read: "We can confirm that in 2017 a serving officer alleged that he had been subjected to racist behaviour during his initial training with Greater Manchester Police.

"Five officers were placed on restricted duties while the allegations were thoroughly investigated by the Professional Standards Branch.

"As a result, the five officers were dealt with under the Unsatisfactory Performance Procedure, which is set out in the Police Performance Regulations of 2012.

"There is absolutely no place for racism within GMP. It is important that all our staff are treated fairly and with respect and we have made significant improvements to the diversity of our workforce over recent years.

"However, we realise the damage these instances can cause and we apologise for any suffering this matter has caused him."

GMP also confirmed they received complaints in 2018 and 2019 relating to Mr Boateng, including a complaint from a member of the public.

These relate to a driving matter, according to the Daily Mirror.

These are currently currently under investigation by the force's Professional Standards Branch, GMP said.

The statement added: "Previously, we received media inquiries in relation to a separate investigation by the Professional Standards Branch into the conduct of a former GMP PC whilst he was a serving officer.

"In respect to these inquiries, we confirmed that allegations were made regarding an officer in 2018 and 2019, which are currently under investigation by the Professional Standards Branch.

"These include a complaint from a member of the public.

"We wish to be clear that any allegations must be investigated thoroughly and we must be fair to both those that have made them and those which are subject to them.

"There should be no presumptions made until all enquiries have been completed and decisions made.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further while the investigation is ongoing."

In the social media post, Mr Boateng's team described the allegations as 'completely false' and said they were an attempt to 'tarnish his career'.

"Mike showed nothing but dedication to GMP," the statement said.

"He joined believing the force represented honesty and integrity."

"Mike will eventually come out and speak his truth."
