Love Island's Joe Garratt looks downcast as he hugs his mum amid abuse accusations

Joe Garratt from Love Island has been pictured looking downcast amid allegations he was abusive towards his co-star Lucie Donlan.

The sandwich seller, 22, was accused of being control towards Lucie, as charity Women's Aid warned of his "possessive behaviour".

Today Joe, who was booted out of the villa earlier this week, was spotted spending time with his mum Rachel after flying back to the UK.

He put an arm around her as they were spotted leaving his London home and getting into a Range Rover.

Dressed in a grey check shirt, black jeans and trainers, Joe looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders.

His mum kept her head down as she kept her face covered in big sunglasses.

On Tuesday she leapt to his defence, denying that he had been controlling and accusing bosses of editing him to make him look bad.

She told MailOnline : "I know my son and he’s not like how he’s being portrayed.

"Both myself and his sister are his best friends. He doesn’t emotionally control anyone."

She added: "I see him every day of the week and there’s no way he would make a girl cry. He’s a normal, loving 22-year-old lad."

Joe and Lucie found themselves at the mercy of the public after their co-stars voted them the least compatible pairing.

The decision was influenced by a series of awkward conversations and tearful displays from Lucie.

The scenes sparked more than 600 complaints to Ofcom while charity Women's Aid even spoke out on the matter.

Joe has refused to apologise for his behaviour , saying he didn't do anything wrong.
