Love Island's Jake 'comforted by mental health team after quitting show amid fakery row'

Jake Cornish is under the care of Love Island's mental health team after leaving the villa, Mirror Online understands.

In a shock Love Island twist, Jake and Liberty Poole quit the show looking for love series just three days ahead of the final.

The pair are said to have forfeited the chance of being crowned winners and bagging the £50,000 after splitting up on Thursday's episode of the show.

And the Mirror understands that since sensationally leaving that Jake will be receiving mental health care and therapy from the villa team.

Jake and Liberty would have been closely monitored and given additional help from experts, if needed, during their stay in the villa due to there being a mental health first aid team on-site at all times and this will continue on the outside.

Under Love Island's duty of care protocols, the contestants are offered a minimum of eight therapy sessions following their departure and they're offered psychological support for up to 14 months from the end of their Love Island stint.

The show introduced new guidelines this year to follow a 2018 enquiry into the series after it was hit with controversy.

Upon announcing the plans, ITV told how there is a big focus on making to make sure that all those taking part receive comprehensive psychological support before, during and after the show.

Ahead of the show beginning the islanders were urged to really consider the repercussions of them appearing on the ITV2 dating show and discuss it thoroughly with their friends and family.

ITV also confirmed that the contestants received pre-filming psychological and medical assessments - done by an independent doctor, psychological consultant.

Reports were also gathered from each Islander’s own GP to check their medical history.

Islanders were also required to fully disclose any medical history that would be relevant to their inclusion in the villa and the production’s ability to provide a suitable environment for them.

It is understood that ITV also offered coaching to the cast in order to give them advice on how to deal with job offers, advertising campaigns and other public appearances and TV show opportunities that may come their way after appearing on Love Island.

In 2018, ITV launched a review of Love Island's participant welfare processes to independently review the show's dealing with contestants.

It came after the tragic suicides of contestants Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon.

Famous faces who previously appeared on Love Island have spoken out about ITV's aftercare.

Amy Hart told Huffington Post : "I can’t fault the support. People have had a lot of bad things to say about them and they might have upped the aftercare, but it’s the same team who’ve worked on the show for five years. I don’t agree with the criticism – they are amazing."

Callum Macleod previously told GQ : "The support before going into the villa was great: we had loads of tests to make sure we were stable."

Alex George spoke with BBC News about his experience with the aftercare as he previously said: "Within 24 hours I had an appointment booked and I continued to be seen, so I’ve had really good aftercare."

In 2020, the station launched Britain Get Talking campaign which led to 6.4million viewers taking action to support their mental health.

This year ITV has partnered with mental health charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), with the aim of helping 1 million young people take action to build their mental health and feel better able to cope with life’s ups and downs.
