Love Island narrator Iain Stirling admitted that Love Island bosses were concerned that they wouldn’t have four couples in romantic pairings ahead of the show’s series 5 finale.
Speaking to Christine Lampard on Lorraine earlier today, the comedian suggested that “nobody wanted to stay together” during the explosive season.
“Casa Amor this year worked better than anyone was expecting,” he told Lampard.
“Normally we’re trying to break couples up but this year nobody wanted to stay together at any point.
“We thought we weren’t going to have four couples for the final at one point - just a bunch of bitter people giving daggers to one another, but we got there in the end.”
This year’s edition of the hit ITV dating show took a dramatic turn when Michael Griffiths decided to dump partner Amber Gill for new islander Joanna Chimonides while she was away at Casa Amor.
When Chimonides was voted out of the villa weeks later, he claimed that he still had feelings for Gill - who instead decided to couple up with new contestant Greg O’Shea.
Jordan Hames had second thoughts about his relationship with Anna Vakili just days after asking her to be his girlfriend. The couple’s romance to come to a dramatic end when he admitted that his “head had been turned” by contestant India Reynolds.
Gill and O’Shea went on to win the show, with longest-standing couple Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury coming second.
Ovie Soko and Reynolds came in third place, while Maura Higgins and Curtis Pritchard ended in fourth position.
Stirling, who has proved a huge hit with fans thanks to his acerbic take on life in the show’s villa, is confirmed to take part in the next series, which will air early in 2020 and will be filmed in South Africa.
He suggested that the January start date could prove even more popular that the usual summer viewing slot.
“I always find with the summer Love Island, obviously you want to watch it in the summer but you’ve got festivals to go to, and holidays and stuff,” he said.
“In January you’re just eating beans and you’re skint so like - you’re paying off your Santa Claus debt and now you can stare at beautiful people in bikinis in the sunshine in Cape Town.”
Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV from 8.30am.
