Love Island's Brad McClelland split with girlfriend of eight years before show

Brad McClelland is going on Love Island after splitting with his girlfriend of eight years.

The Amble labourer was confirmed as a contestant on the new series on Monday, one of five boys to be named on the Love Island 2021 line-up.

A self-confessed "nana's boy," Brad quickly established himself as a firm favourite with Love Island fans, although bookies currently have him behind cricketer and PE teacher Hugo Hammond, VIP host Aaron Francis and semi-pro footballer Toby Aromolaran to be winning lad this year.

Love Island 2021 line-up confirmed

Brad signed up for Love Island after a split with his long-term other half, with him addressing the relationship in his first interview with ITV.

When asked what he looks for in a potential love interest, the 26-year-old said: "Someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously. I could not be with someone that’s constantly on your case.

"I’d say I like dark hair, dark skin, dark eyes. But then my ex-girlfriend who I was with for over 8 years was fair skinned, blue eyes, blonde hair."

Brad says he's heading into the villa to find romance and to get a sun tan, saying:""I want to date face-to-face, I like meeting people.

"I’m easy going, laid back. Who wouldn’t want to be in a nice villa in a hot country for a while?"

He has also declared that when on Love Island he's hoping to go for a date on a boat as they "always look the best."

And on the subject of his own dating history, he added: "I've never been on a blind date. I’ll just be myself and go with it. When I was in a relationship we only went for about 3 or 4 meals out as I cooked myself. I’ve been told I’m quite a good cook."
