Love Island's 2016 cast were given opportunity to vote on Brexit referendum from villa

Love Island and Brexit may not be an obvious match, but even ITV's smash hit dating show couldn't escape the political climate in the UK five years ago.

On Thursday 23 June 2016 the EU referendum took place and the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.

And while Love Island contestants are normally blissfully cut off from the real world during their time in the villa in Spain, Iain Stirling, who provides the voice over for the reality TV series, has revealed that in series two, the lovestruck lot were offered postal votes for the Brexit referendum.

Stirling went on to reveal that Love Island alumni Terry Walsh had a surprising reaction to the opportunity.

"The Brexit vote happened during series two of Love Island," Stirling, 33, explained on Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe’s Lockdown Parenting Hell podcast.

"A guy called Terry, amazing man – we offered them the postal votes, I don’t know how many of them took it. ‘Terry said, “It doesn’t bother me that much because I spend six months of the year in Ibiza.”‘

Regarding the show's return this year, the husband of the show's presenter Laura Whitmore, said: ‘This is the thing about Covid – we don’t actually know where we’ll be for it.

"A lovely mixture of Covid and Brexit means that going abroad has become all the more…you’ve got a load of forms to fill in and a load of jabs to get."

When Iain met Laura at an ITV party in 2016, their connection was said to have been immediate.

But despite sources claiming they 'hit it of instantly', for months Iain, 32, only slid into her DMs with chaste talk about her pet maltipoo Mick. In fact, it ended up being down to Laura, 35, to make the first move.

The pair got married at Dublin City Hall last year and announced that they became new parents to a baby daughter in April.

The pair have yet to reveal the name she and Iain have cherry picked for their little girl, however Laura did give fans their first glimpse at her bundle of joy at Easter.
