Love Island Producers Are Considering Turning It Into A Movie Because Why TF Not?

love-island-movie

In proof that Hollywood will milk any popular IP for all it’s worth, it’s being reported that the company behind Love Island is looking at turning the reality show into a fictional feature film.

Yep, Steven Spielberg or James Cameron better clear their schedules, because this is destined for Oscars glory. Or a Razzie Award, at the very least.

Deadline reports that ITV America, which produces the US version of the reality dating show, has considered giving the show the big screen treatment as part of a broader strategy to maximise its most successful IP.

“Why are we not taking Love Island and figuring out how we’re going to translate that into the movie world?” ITV America’s CEO David George told Deadline. “There may be something going on there. I can’t even begin to tell you what it is, but there are those types of conversations.”

“We are open to expanding the possibilities of what that brand is,” George added.

Before you start marking your calendars, George stopped short of revealing any further details about the project, including whether it’s just a bizarre thought experiment dreamt up by execs or an actual production in the works.

Since no fandom is quite as heated as reality TV stans, reactions to the news came thick and fast. “Who asked for this?” one user wrote on X, with another saying “the real question” is who’ll be on board to direct. Ahem, Spielberg.

The potential movie will coast off the success of Love Island in both the US and abroad, with the Australian version airing its seventh season late last year.

The season was filled with friendship fallouts, love triangles (or diamonds), and surprisingly enduring romances. In other words, it had all the makings of rom-com meets psychological thriller and dramedy.

We’ll keep our ear to the ground about extra deets for the prospective Love Island movie, but in the meantime, let the Oscars campaign commence.
