Love Island narrator Iain Stirling panned for 'false' declaration at start of new series

Iain Stirling rubbed viewers up the wrong way by making what they deemed to be a 'false' declaration within seconds of the new series starting.

Iain has been the voice of the show now, as well as being the other half o f Love Island main presenter Laura Whitmore. And, while fans have a lot of time for his running commentary and quick whited quips during every episode of every series, they took exception to a statement he made at the start of Monday's first episode. Before ITV2 viewers got their first look at Love Island's new villa, Iain's voice was heard in the opening shots.

And it was a comment Iain made about Love Island being 'the OG dating show' that was met with a far from warm reception on social media. As glimpses of this year's Love Island contestants, Scottish comedian Iain said: "Buckle up Britain because the OG dating show is back."

The fact that Iain has forgotten other dating shows that came before Love Island was seized on by people watching at home, who chiefly had two words for him...Blind Date. One tweeted: "What’s with #LoveIsland claiming to be the OG dating show?! I bet @cillablackobe and Blind Date would beg to differ!"

A second, also unimpressed with Iain's boast, reacted: "Why do they keep calling it the OG dating show?? Its aint Blind Date," with a very similar response reading: "OG dating show? I’m sorry #LoveIsland but that credential has to go to Blind Date."

Being slightly more diplomatic a fourth commented: "can they stop calling it the OG dating show. It's so not. It's good and iconic... but not the OG."
