Love Island: Inside new bombshell Aaron Simpson's time as a footballer in Ireland

Love Island’s new bombshell Aaron Simpson played for League of Ireland football club Waterford before entering the villa.

The footballer is barely on the show 24 hours but has already garnered plenty of attention at home and inside the villa, after he jokingly told Chloe she was 'past her prime' whilst trying to flirt with her on their first date.

But before playing the game in Mallorca, it turns out the 24-year-old spent some time playing football in Ireland - having spent a season with Waterford FC in 2019.

The defender joined the club on a permanent deal until the end of the season, and made eight appearances with the Blues squad that year before leaving for Dover Athletic.

Speaking to WaterfordFC.ie at the time about the big move, the sports star said: “I’ve been training for the last two weeks so it’s great to get signed up now. I’ve enjoyed the training so far and I’m looking forward to playing some games now.

“I’ve settled in really quickly and that’s made it all easier for me, and Alan [Reynolds] and the coaches have been great to me since I’ve come in.

“I haven’t played much recently but I’ve been training really hard, first with Joe [Gamble] and I feel fit and everybody just wants to play games.

“I was a bit sceptical coming over, of course, I’d never even been in Ireland, but once I got here and saw the professionalism of how things are run, the lads and the staff were great and I got a good vibe from it here and that’s why I wanted to stay.

“Coming to Ireland, I wasn’t really too sure about what the standard would be and that but we’ve got great players here, a really good mixture with some really experienced guys and a lot of good young players too and I can’t wait to learn from the likes of Damien [Delaney] and I think we can do really well this season.”

The Kent born professional footballer last played as a right back for National League club Sutton United.

He began his career at Maidstone United before signing a two-year deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 2015 as a 17-year-old.

He has since spent time on loan with clubs including Portsmouth and Kilmarnock.

Reflecting on his footie career during his entrance interview, Aaron said: "I started playing when I was about four or five. I signed my first professional contract when I was 17. I'm 24 so it's been quite a journey."

Simpson made his debut on the TV show on Monday night and said he is ready to ditch the ‘player’ image and settle down with someone.

He said: "A lot of people have an assumption of me as being a typical player, but I got all of that out of my system when I was younger and now I'm a lot more laid-back when it comes to dating.

He added: “I think it’s an amazing opportunity. I’m all about having a good time and hopefully I can leave with a ‘worldie’.

“I’m definitely looking for a long-lasting relationship.”
