Love Island cancelled due to coronavirus as ITV say it would be 'impossible to safeguard' people

Love Island has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year was meant to see two series of Love Island for the first time in the show's history and, after a 'winter' edition in January from South Africa, the countdown was on for the programme's return to Majorca in June.

However, coronavirus has now ruined plans for the forthcoming series into chaos, despite the fact that over 13,000 people had applied to go into the villa..

"We have tried every which way to make Love Island this summer but logistically it’s just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that for us is the priority," ITV boss Kevin Lygo confirmed.

He added: "In normal circumstances, we would be preparing very soon to travel out to the location in Mallorca to get the villa ready but clearly that’s now out of the question."

Kevin hinted there were doubts over the summer series at the end of last week when, speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, he said: "We're right approaching the moment with Love Island of is it feasible, will Majorca open its doors to hundreds of production people arriving?

"Will there have to be quarantine? All these things. And so we have to factor all of that in and also, what signal might it be sending out if we're doing a show where everybody is crammed together slathering over each other, and the rest of the world is told don't go near anyone in the park?

"I'm a little uneasy about that, so we will make a decision in a proper way quite soon, but it affects a lot of people, a big commercial impact for us, there's 200 people working on that show."
