Love Island bosses urged to rethink shooting new season in South Africa over rising violent crime

Love Island fans were thrilled when it was revealed that the show will have two seasons a year, with a winter version being shot in South Africa.

But bosses have now been urged not to film the new series in Cape Town because of the high violent crime rates.

The murder rate has risen to 12 killings a day, which rises to around 50 at weekends.

ITV has reportedly been urged to reconsider filming there because of concerns over the Islanders' safety, the Daily Star reports.

Locals claim gang fights - fuelled by alcohol, drugs and guns - are now spiralling out of control.

President Ramaphosa has sent in the army to the most violent suburbs of Cape Town to try and calm things down.

A source said: "Cape Town International Airport welcomed 5.3 million holiday makers last year - up 3% on the previous year."

Mirror Online has contacted ITV for comment.

Last month it was reported that fans are refusing to apply for the new series because of the high crime rates.

This was before the levels had risen even higher.

Taking to  Twitter , one worried viewer said: "Cape Town, South Africa which was featured on the news tonight as where 8 murders occur a day - think I’ll pass on that one thanks  #LoveIsland "

Another added: "The f*** wants to find love in Cape Town I swear that's a notorious f***ing city in South Africa and the crime rate has risen 18% this year. No thank you."

Cape Town has already served as the  setting for the Bachelor UK 2019 series  , as well as being where  Made in Chelsea: South Africa was filmed  .

The country will also be put in the spotlight when  Prince Harry  and  Meghan Markle  head there for a royal tour later this year.
