Love Island bosses to accept non-binary applications for latest series

Love Island bosses have revealed they will accept non-binary applications for the latest series.

The new series of the ITV2 reality show - which was won by Liam Reardon and Millie Court last year - will be back on our screens later this year, but bosses are already hunting far and wide to find their new contestants who want to find love this summer.

The application form allows people to choose their gender from one of the following options: male, female, non-binary, prefer not to say and prefer to self-describe. Sexual orientation also gives five different options - straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual or other.

The official application form for the show now asks people to choose their gender male, female, non-binary, prefer not to say and prefer to self-describe.

There's also a sexual orientation category with five different options - straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual or other.

An insider told the Sun: "Producers are under more pressure than ever to make this series as woke as possible after it has previously come under criticism for its lack of diversity.

"The move could make the basic rules of the show complicated, as each coupling ceremony separates boys and girls, but they are keen to have a non-binary contestant this year. It’s all about inclusivity and breaking down boundaries."

It comes after ITV's director of television Kevin Lygo said they are still struggling to find a way include gay couples in the show.

"Love Island is a particular thing, of course, it’s about boys and girls coupling up," he said.

"So if you wanted to do a gay version, or you wanted to widen it, it is discussed and we haven’t yet found a way that would make it suitable for that show."

Last year's show saw Millie Court and Liam Reardon celebrate after being crowned the winners.
