Love Island bosses 'plan winter series in South Africa'

Love Island’s villa is reportedly set for some winter sun with a new version of the reality show to fill the void during the cold months.

With the popularity of the ITV2 show shooting up and up, producers are reportedly looking at making a winter version of the series to film in South Africa, keeping to the same format as the summer success.

“Producers want to keep the format simple and mop up the gaping hole Celebrity Big Brother left reality TV hungry audiences,” a source told The Sun Online.

"Winter Love Island makes sense as fans adore the drama and love triangles and everyone wants to enjoy a bit of sun on screens in the cold winter months.”

The insider added that plans were “still in very early stages” with no view to casting right now, but insisted it was on ITV Studios’ radar.

ITV declined to comment when contacted by Standard Online.

The alleged new plans come just one year after Survival Of The Fittest, also out in South Africa, was axed after a single poorly-rated series.

The show, hosted by Laura Whitmore, tested contestants’ physical and mental strength with a series of challenges, while living in a luxurious villa like Love Island.

Series five of Love Island has seen the highest launch show ratings since the show began, with consolidated figures revealing an audience of 5.9 million viewers watched the opening episode across ITV2, computers, tablets and mobiles.

An average of 3.3 million tuned in on the first day of the series to see Caroline Flack introduced the new batch of islanders.

Love Island continues nightly at 9pm on ITV2.
