Love Island 2021: Strict rules and regulations every contestant must follow

Things are heating up on Love Island 2021, with contestants "moving mad" left, right and centre.

It may seem like the contestants do what they want – but the truth is there are many rules and regulations they have to follow in the villa.

ITV bosses have introduced many rules over the years in an attempt to keep everything in check.

For example, eagle-eyed viewers might have noticed that you never see islanders smoke cigarettes in the villa.

Although some of the islanders make questionable choices in the villa – you never see them drunk.

This is all down to the strict rules they must follow during their time in the Majorcan villa.

But there are other rules they have to follow too. Here are 7 rules the contestants must follow.

Smoking is banned in the villa and garden

As mentioned previously, the contestants are no longer allowed to be seen to be smoking.

After floods of complaints over the heavy exposure of smoking contestants on screen in 2018, ITV told the government: "No smoking paraphernalia can be seen on camera and will therefore be banned from the villa.”

Smoking is only allowed in the designated smoking area outside the villa, and they can only use it alone.

Drunk ban

Alcohol is allowed – but only two pre-poured glasses per night.

Two bottles of Prosecco between all the islanders is allowed at a party.

A Love Island spokesperson said: 'We provide our Islanders with all of the necessary precautionary measures and all alcohol consumption is strictly monitored.'

Drugs are banned

Drugs and other illicit substances such as legal highs or steroids are strictly forbidden.

Contestants can take prescription medication as long as this has been approved by the production team before entering the villa.

According to The Sun, all Love Island contestants faced drugs tests before entering the villa.

They aren't allowed to know the time

The Love Island contestants are in a little bubble, which adds to the experience.

Forgetting about the outside world also means not knowing what the time is – or what day it is.

Chris Williamson, who appeared on the show in 2015, told BBC: "If you were to be driven to a date location, the driver of the car would have his watch on a different time and the clock in the car would be a different time to that."

Montana Brown from series three said: "You never know what time it is".

No social media or personal phones

You might be slightly confused because the contestants are often spotted with mobile phones, taking pictures or receiving the famous texts.

But participants are not allowed to use these to access the outside world.

That means the contestants won't know how many Instagram followers they have gained until after leaving the villa.

No sharing money

The contestants are no doubt looking for love – but let's not forget Love Island is a competition.

The winners receive £50,000 – and can either steal or split with the other person in their couple.

But one thing they are not allowed to do, according to Men's Health, is promise prize money to others in the show.

Specific bed times

Bed times and mornings are a staple part of any Love Island episode.

We see them go to bed, have some chats and cuddles, and then wake up in the morning.

But they can't go to bed whenever they please.

Former Islander Arabella Chi admitted that they have a bedtime and wake-up call.

No nudity

While some of the contestants get quite frisky with each other, they are reportedly not allowed to be fully nude.

Contestants are not allowed to be totally naked in front of any other islanders.

This is because of the fact that the whole villa is technically a public space.

No masturbation

There is no rule saying the islanders can't get frisky – but this has to be with a partner.

No masturbation is allowed in the Love Island villa.

While previous contestant Elma Pazar said it was likely Islanders do it off-screen, she admitted: "there are cameras everywhere, even in the toilet."

No inappropriate language or bullying

The ITV production team are very strict about any inappropriate language or bullying behaviour.

Contestants are strictly forbidden from making inappropriate remarks or comments.

Bullying or aggression towards other contestants or member of the production team could result in dismissal from the show.
