Love Island 2019 in fresh race row as ethnic stars are chosen LAST in first coupling

Love Island 2019 has been plunged into yet another race row after the black contestants were chosen last in the first coupling.

The dating show returned to ITV last night with a fresh batch of contestants, but many viewers were left cringing as the couples were matched.

None of the girls stepped forward for Sherif Lanre, leaving the rugby player having to awkwardly pick Amber Gill to couple with.

However, it didn't last long as Geordie stunner Amber ditched him for a white contestant - Calum MacLeod.

Sherif got left on the subs bench, and he was soon joined by hunky firefighter Michael Griffiths, who's mixed race, who also got pied.

Lucie initially coupled up with Michael but she also ditched him for a white Islander, Joe Garrett.

Irish scientist Yewande Biala was also not picked along with Anna, so they ended up with Sherif and Michael respectively by default.

Viewers took to Twitter to rage about race issues, with many insisting similar problems at the coupling have happened in prevous years.

One wrote: "This is mad!!!! LoveIsland flash backs! Black guy, black girl and mixed race guy all left unpicked. Mad!!!"

Another added: "What I don't understand is what the answer is? The producers get accused of not being diverse enough if they don't have black folk on.

"So they do and the black folk don't get picked in fact they don't even pick each other."

A third tweeted: "Love island is so racist omg it’s always the black people that get binned off for white people."

Former Love Island star Marcel Somerville, 33, also weighed in on the controversy, admitting it reminded him of his own experience of not getting picked.

No female Islander stood forward for Marcel when he first entered the villa two years ago and he clearly felt uncomfortable when the same happened for Sherif.

Marcel tweeted: "This is mad!!!! #LoveIsland flash backs! Black guy, black girl and mixed race guy all left unpicked. Mad!!!"
