Love, ice cream and a ban on white guys: the podcasts to listen to this weekend

Here’s what we enjoyed this week. Let us know what you’re listening to, and what you’d like us to feature, in the comments.

Sooo many white guys

Hilarious comedian and author Phoebe Robinson – co-host of Two Dope Queens – has just gone solo. In her new, equally dope podcast, she will interview entertainers who are excelling in their fields … and aren’t “white guys”. Then, at the end of the season, she’ll interview one white man, “the token”, and “he’ll have to speak for the entire white race,” she jokes. The episode that kicked off Sooo Many White Guys featured “next queen of rap” Lizzo. She and Robinson tackled hair, Prince – and the killing of black people by police in the US. Last but not least, “ball-busting” executive producer Ilana Glazer of Broad City infiltrated the show with a hilarious skit at the end. We can’t wait for more.

Here are Robinson and Lizzo playing a game baptised “bone, collaborate with or ether in a rap battle” (like that other game):

We’ll always have ice cream

Because the world is getting worse, because it’s not hot in the UK and because we all need to turn to the comfortable and familiar sometimes, here is an hour-long episode of All Songs Considered about ice cream. Yes, the hosts of the music podcast par excellence dedicated this episode to the frozen food that Ronald Reagan decided should be commemorated every July. With gems like:

Plus, the story of what George Washington and his crew had to do in the 1700s to get some ice cream (spoiler: it took months).

A little bit of love

Love Me debuted a few weeks ago on CBC and it masters a simple formula: one or two unusual stories about love. This weekend, you can enjoy one man’s quest to substitute his “overbearing, fabulous Jewish mother” with friends, and what happened to the woman whose summer fling decided to become a monk. This podcast is short and sweet, which sometimes is all that’s needed.
