Love Actually show in Newcastle promises to be choir's 'most Christmassy yet'

Festive film favourite Love Actually will be brought alive in Newcastle this Christmas through its heartwarming music.

The soundtrack of the 2003 film - which is steeped in seasonal goodwill with song highlights including Christmas is All Around by Bill Nighy's aging rock star character Billie Mack - is to be performed live in December by popular choir Some Voices Newcastle. And it says this festive outing will mark "our most Christmassy show yet!".

Called Choir Actually, it will feature 50 voices performing original arrangements of film favourites including All I Want For Christmas, Jump (For My Love), Both Sides Now, God Only Knows and All You Need Is Love. And the show is out to create the perfect Christmas night out.

It will take place in Cobalt Studios at Shieldfield, Newcastle, on December 10 and the choir says it will be 'the 'perfect start to Christmas actually'.

The focus of Some Voices, which describes itself as a choir without the boring bits, is upon being inclusive and accessible, offering equal opportunity to all. It says it celebrates the individual and does not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity, gender, sexuality or disability.

Some Voices started out in 2010 with just seven choir members meeting up in London to sing and socialise and it has now grown well beyond the capital to include 1,100 people who meet in rehearsal venues across the country, including in Newcastle. It prides itself upon being contemporary choir with a difference and it has a wide repertoire featuring original arrangements of popular songs.

It says it has brought its signature twist to bear, for instance, on everything from Bowie to Björk and from Britpop to Hip Hop. Songs are arranged for the choir by musical directors Laura Howe - a vocal artist, director and composer for TV, theatre and live events - and multi-instrumentalist and composer Curtis Stansfield who is keyboard player for The Script and has perfomed with the likes of Paolo Nutini and Natasha Bedingfield.

The choir has enjoyed several TV appearances of its own including at the 2021 Royal Variety Performance and the 2020 Brit Awards and it provided the soundtrack for BBC1’s 2019 Christmas advert.

The Newcastle show will start at 8pm on December 10, after doors open at 7pm at the venue in Boyd Street. For tickets, which cost £8.50, see here and for more information about the choir see here. Information about the next opportunities for joining the choir is available here.
