Louth woman claims nobody wants to fix giant pothole that wrecked her car's tyre

A giant pothole wrecked the tyre on a woman’s new car - but no-one wants to fix the crater, it has been claimed.

Ciara Courtney, 34, from Ardee in Co Louth, claims her county council told her it’s not their responsibility to have the giant hole fixed in Rockfield Close - a private housing estate in the town.

Ms Courtney has told the Irish Mirror that it’s not about the price of her tyre, but public safety which is the priority.

She said: “It was pitch dark when I drove into the pothole at the weekend and it instantly busted my tyre.

“I went to see the pothole the following morning and measured the depth of it and it was over five inches. It’s an absolute disgrace.

“I have to pay €165 for a new tyre on my car that I have just over a month.

“I work in Dublin and I’m without the car for a week now, which is a nuisance.

“But my main concern is that kids are out cycling and someone could be seriously hurt.”

The local authority can only take charge of roads once the developer has met its planning permission requirements. Ms Courtney said efforts to contact the developer have failed.

She said: “Louth County Council say they do not have control of the estate but surely this is a health and safety issue?

“It’s a case of passing around the responsibility. Just because it’s a public road should not be the reason for jeopardizing the public’s safety, it should be a priority.

“No one is being held accountable for the state of the roads and the council say their hands are tied, it’s just not good enough. I’m sure this is a national issue.”
