Louth GAA pay tribute after passing of 1957 All-Ireland winner Alfie Monk

Louth GAA have paid tribute after the passing of Alfie Monk, a member of the county's last All-Ireland winning side.

The former Naomh Mhuire forward passed in Louth County Hospital on Monday at the age of 86.

The Drogheda man was a substitute in the Wee county's All-Ireland triumph over Cork in 1957, which also included Louth's last Leinster title - a win over Dublin in the decider.

Louth County Board Chairman Peter Fitzpatrick has extended his own sympathy and that of Louth GAA to Alfie’s family.

“I extend my sympathy and sympathy of Louth GAA to his wife Gladys, his children Rodney, Jackie and Gary, daughters-in-law Amanda and Sheila, son-in-law Jeff, grandchildren Lewis, Zoe, Louise, Caroline and Hannah, his brother Eddie, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law and friends"

Legendary GAA broadcaster Brian Carthy tweeted: "Sorry to hear that Alfie Monk has passed on. Rest in peace. Deepest sympathies to his family at this sad time. That famous team photograph has adorned many a Louth home for more than 60 years. Heroes."

He also holds the distinction of also winning an All-Ireland junior title with Meath in 1952 before moving from the St Patrick’s club to Naomh Mhuire, with whom he won a Louth SFC in 1953.

It was the only occasion that the now defunct club won the title, while Louth have yet to claim Leinster or All-Ireland honours since that landmark success of 63 years ago.

His funeral will take place privately in respect of government guidelines during the Covid-19 pandemic, a memorial service will be held on a later date.
