Louisville (5-3) vs. Miami (5-4) Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

After coming up with a stunning win over Virginia, Louisville is a win away from a massive one-year turnaround and getting bowl eligible. It’ll have winnable chances coming up next with NC State and Syracuse to follow, but beat the Canes, and then it’s time to fight for much bigger things.

Want a TOTALLY crazy thought? If the Cardinals win their final three ACC games, and if Wake Forest loses once more, technically, they’ll be the league’s second-best team.

It starts by keeping the downfield passing game working.

The Cardinals might not have a high-powered passing game, but they’re hitting the deep passes averaging close to ten yards per throw. They have to at least keep pushing the ball deep to open things up a wee bit – the Miami run defense is too good to consistently pound away.

Defensively, the Cardinals aren’t a rock – especially against the run – but they should be saved by a Hurricane offense that’s beyond miserable at keeping the chains moving. There’s no Miami running game, and the O is dead last in college football on third downs.

The O line just isn’t good enough, but …

Why Miami Will Win

The run D and linebacking corps continue to be the real deal.

Georgia Tech was able to pull off over 200 yards on the ground in its stunner of a win, but that’s it. Virginia Tech ran for 153 yards, Pitt ran for 176, and that’s it for the teams able to grind out more than 100 yards against this group.

Louisville might be able to throw the ball deep, but it doesn’t do it consistently enough, at least lately. The O works a whole lot better when the ground game is rolling, hitting the 200-yard mark in every game but the losses to Florida State and Clemson.

It’s not going to hit the 200-yard mark against Miami.

Offensively, Miami got its guy back in full form.

N’Kosi Perry was fine, but Jarren Williams is the spark. He hasn’t been consistent enough with his accuracy lately, but he showed off his deep ball ability against Florida State – throwing for 313 yards with two touchdowns – and he should be able to bomb away on a Louisville secondary that’s getting torched for 230 yards or more in each of its last six games.

What’s Going To Happen

Louisville might be playing well, but this is a bad matchup in a variety of ways.

The Miami run defense will keep the score low, Williams will push for over 250 yards through the air with at least two big home runs, and the D line will live in the Cardinal backfield enough to be annoying.

Louisville will get bowl eligible, but not this week.
