Louise Jameson returns to Emmerdale as Rhona Goskirk's mum Mary - 49 years after first appearance on soap

Emmerdale fans will soon welcome a new character to the soap although actress Louise Jameson actually first appeared in the soap nearly 50-years-ago.

Emmerdale viewers will soon see the arrival of Louise, 70, will join as Rhona Goskirk's mum Mary.

As our colleagues at The Mirror report, Louise actually appeared in the ITV soap 49 years ago back in the programme’s Emmerdale Farm days. The acting star actually has an enviable accolade.

Louise played teenager Sharon Crossthwaite, the cousin of Annie Sugden, and daughter to Beryl and Ronnie Crossthwaite.

Sharon met a gruesome fate in 1973 when she was raped and murdered by Jim Latimer.

The minor character was the first ever character to be murdered on the ITV soap.

Discussing her previous role, Louise said: “She was a very sweet and innocent young girl. We can’t bring her back because she's dead, so I've come back as someone completely other!”

The acting star, who previously appeared in EastEnders and Doctor Who, has spoken about the differences between the Emmerdale we see today and Emmerdale Farm.

"There was a great generosity and spirit then, but this is an extraordinary machine. I feel like I have jumped on a very fast moving carousel.

"For the first 10 days I felt like I was slightly catching my breath because there's three machines moving at any one time.

"There's a group of 60 actors including everyone behind the camera, and a big machine that keeps everything working. The welcome was extraordinary, it was really lovely. I have felt welcomed into a family."

Discussing her new role, Louise has told viewers Mary and daughter Rhona have a strained relationship.
