Louis van Gaal sticks boot into Manchester United with Matthijs de Ligt advice

Louis van Gaal has advised Ajax wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt to join Manchester City , Barcelona or Juventus when the summer transfer window opens.

Holland international De Ligt has enjoyed a sensational season with Ajax, who are one of the eight teams still in the Champions League , and is club captain at just 19.

Europe's elite clubs are queuing up to sign him this summer, with Barcelona believed to be at the front of the pack to secure his signature, reports the Mirror .

Former Manchester United and Holland manager Van Gaal was asked for his opinion on the Dutch youngster now that we are just a few months away from the transfer window re-opening.

Van Gaal named three clubs he believes De Ligt could, or rather, should, sign for and interestingly decided to leave out the team he used to manage: Manchester United.

"De Ligt at Juventus? I think De Ligt can play in any competition," Van Gaal told Ziggo Sport.

"In Italy they are the masters of defense, so he can best develop there. If I had the chance I would go to Barcelona.

"They have central defenders who are not too good, so he will play there. Or I would go to Manchester City.

"I don't think the central defenders are that great either, so he'll play there too."

Van Gaal managed Manchester United for two years from 2014 before he was sacked for Jose Mourinho.

The Dutchman hit out at Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's decision in an interview with the BBC.

He said: "I can imagine Woodward chooses Mourinho. He is a top coach. He has won a lot of titles. More than me.

"What I don't like is Woodward contacting my successor, knowing in his mind he will replace me and he keeps his mouth shut for six months.

"Every Friday I had to go into press conferences and be asked what I thought about the rumours. What does that do to the authority of the coach?

"To win the FA Cup when, for six months, the media has a noose round my neck, is my biggest achievement."
