Louis Van Gaal reveals what Ed Woodward told him about Jose Mourinho after FA Cup final win

Louis Van Gaal says Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward undermined his authority as manager of the club, and has revealed what he was told when Jose Mourinho replaced him.

Van Gaal, who managed United between 2014 and 2016, was sacked after winning the FA Cup in his final season, with Mourinho succeeding him.

And Van Gaal has suggested that Woodward undermined him by allegedly contacting Mourinho while the Dutchman was still in charge.

He told the BBC: "I can imagine [why] Woodward chooses Mourinho. He is a top coach. He has won a lot of titles. More than me.

"What I don't like is Woodward contacting my successor, knowing in his mind he will replace me and he keeps his mouth shut for six months.

Louis van Gaal blames 'boring' Manchester United football on two things

"Every Friday I had to go into press conferences and be asked what I thought about the rumours. What does that do to the authority of the coach?"

Despite his feelings towards his departure from Old Trafford, Van Gaal admitted he regards the FA Cup success - United's first in 12 years - as his biggest achievement.

He explained: "To win the FA Cup when, for six months, the media has a noose round my neck, is my biggest achievement."

Four Manchester United transfers that could get the best out of Paul Pogba

And the former boss then revealed a conversation he had with Woodward after that cup final win, where he was told that he would be replaced by Mourinho.

"I spoke to Woodward the day after that game," Van Gaal said.

"His argument was that I was only going to be there for one more year and Mourinho would be there for three, four or five.

"I appreciate he hired a private plane to get me back to Portugal but his arguments were not good enough."
