Louis van Gaal names the team he wants to win the Champions League as he makes big Spurs claim

Spurs will be back in Champions League action next month with a quarter-final clash against Man City on the agenda.

A place in the knockout phase looked highly unlikely midway through the group stage after failing to win in their opening three games, but the Lilywhites made it through by the skin of their teeth in the final game as they drew with Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

Spurs then put Borussia Dortmund to the sword in the Round of 16 to set up a crunch clash against Pep Guardiola's side.

City have had the upper hand over Tottenham in their last three meetings and many are predicting them to once again get the better of Mauricio Pochettino's team.

However, there are always plenty of shocks in the Champions League and Harry Kane and Co will be quietly confident of sealing a place in the final four of the competition.

Speaking to the BBC, ex-Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was quizzed about who he would like to win the competition this season and it's fair to say that his answer will not have gone down well at his former club.

"People think Barcelona are the best but they are not. Manchester City and Liverpool are more of a team than Barcelona - and Liverpool are more of a team than City," he said.

"In my philosophy the best team shall win but I hope for City because they play the best football."

As well as speaking about who will triumph in Madrid at the start of June, the Dutchman also made a big claim regarding the top job at Spurs.

Van Gaal was heavily tipped to be appointed manager in 2014 but in the end he decided to head to Old Trafford despite holding talks with Daniel Levy.

While the 67-year-old has now claimed he may have made the wrong choice five years ago, Spurs fans certainly aren't complaining with Mauricio Pochettino doing a fine job in N17.

"Tottenham were a better selection because Manchester United were an old team and I knew I would have to transform them," said the ex-Barcelona boss.

"Was it the wrong choice? Maybe, but I follow my heart.

"I worked at the number one team in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and now also in England."
