Louis van Gaal: Former Man Utd boss admits he should have joined Tottenham

Louis van Gaal has admitted he may have made a mistake opting to manage Manchester United instead of Tottenham

The Dutchman took over at Old Trafford in 2014 and claims he had the opportunity to join Spurs.

Despite winning the FA Cup, Van Gaal failed to establish a title challenge and left in 2016 and believes in hindsight moving to London may have proved a wiser decision.

“Tottenham were a better selection because Manchester United were an old team and I knew I would have to transform them,” van Gaal told BBC Sport.

“Was it the wrong choice? Maybe, but I follow my heart. I worked at the number one team in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and now also in England.

“They had seven players over 30. We spoke about that at the job interview. In my first year we qualified for the Champions League. In my second we won the FA Cup.”

Van Gaal was succeeded by Jose Mourinho, who lasted until December last year before being sacked.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now expected to be handed the job on a full-time basis after impressing as interim manager.

Yet United are still to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure.
