Louis van Gaal delivers Jan Vertonghen transfer verdict ahead of potential Tottenham summer exit

Jan Vertonghen's time at Tottenham will soon come to an end as his current contract is set to expire in the summer.

Signed from Ajax ahead of the 2012/13 season, the Belgian international has become a key part of the Tottenham defence over the past eight years.

Vertonghen has struggled to replicate his previous form at Spurs this season and he is now no longer a regular in the back four with his poor form keeping him out of Jose Mourinho's side.

The centre-back will not be short of options this summer due to the fact a number of clubs will have limited money to spend because of the current situation across the globe.

Linked with Inter Milan and Napoli, Vertonghen has also been tipped to return to Holland and re-sign for Ajax once again.

Louis van Gaal, who previously managed the Dutch giants before switching to Barcelona in 1997, was asked about a potential return to the Johan Cruijff ArenA for the player and he delivered his verdict on what his former side should do.

"I am against bringing players back," he told Het Nieuwsblad (via Sport Witness ). "When Frank Rijkaard returned to Ajax, I had trouble with that. And that eventually became a golden purchase.

"I would dare to do it with Vertonghen. He has the level tactically and technically.

“And like the time he was substituted at Tottenham (in tears at his replacement against Southampton), that affected me so much. That really touched me.

“When you deal with your profession as a player, you have to be a good person.

"And then there is a good chance that you want to take revenge from that disappointment.”
