Louis van Gaal blames 'boring' Manchester United football on two things

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has dismissed the idea that his brand of football was boring during his time at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal succeeded David Moyes as United boss, but was replaced two years later with Jose Mourinho, despite winning the FA Cup in his final game in charge.

Supporters viewed his style of football unexciting to watch - a factor that arguably was part of his downfall at the end of the 2015-2016 season.

But speaking to the BBC, Van Gaal rejected the idea that he encouraged a 'boring' style of football, offering two reasons why a more attacking brand - widely considered the 'United' way - wasn't possble.

He said: "It is not true. You say it was boring. Why was it boring? Maybe it was boring-attacking but that was because the opponent parked the bus.

"Then you have to play at a higher tempo, which is difficult. Then you have to see what kind of players you have."

As well as blaming opposition tactics, Van Gaal suggested injuries to Robin van Persie forced him to play Wayne Rooney out of position.

He continued: "Wayne Rooney should have been the number 10 but Robin van Persie was not fit enough for the Premier League, which meant Rooney was the best striker we had.

"But Manchester United needs the best striker in the world."

United finished fourth and fifth under Van Gaal, winning the FA Cup in his second season.
