Louis Theroux slams Tiger King for not focusing more on animal rights issues

Louis Theroux has criticised the Netflix series Tiger King after being one of the first to interview its star Joe Exotic.

The documentary maker, 49, said the show should have focused more on animal rights than the craziness surrounding Joe and the other big cat zookeepers in the US.

He interviewed Joe - whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage - back in 2011 for his BBC show America’s Most Dangerous Pets.

Speaking on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Zoe Ball on Wednesday, Louis said that while he did enjoy the show, he thought there should have been more background to the poor treatment of the tigers.

Louis explained: "I enjoyed it and I'd known about it because I know one of the people who was involved in making it so I saw it on the horizon.

"I knew a lot of stuff about the alleged murder for hire plot.

"Joe had always said he thought Carole Baskin had arranged the murder of her husband and fed the husband to her tigers, which needlessly to say she denies and I don't personally believe.

"I thought it was an entertaining and amazing romp through this netherworld of big cat owners and it really gripped my attention."

But Louis, who was speaking to Zoe to plug his Grounded podcast, said his only "quibble" with the programme was its coverage of the animal rights issue.

He continued: "I did think the tiger perspective was slightly lost, that was my little quibble.

"I sort of thought here is an animal rights story here which they kind of did at the end a bit but you didn't see the foreground.

"I feel bad even raising that because I thought it was an amazing piece of multi-episode storytelling of the type that I would aspire to do.

"That whole long form immersive documentary storytelling is brlliant."
