Louis Theroux's secret cancer heartbreak last year amid Bake Off appearance

Louis Theroux revealed that a family member died from cancer last year as he appeared on The Great British Bake Off in aid of Stand Up To Cancer tonight.

The 49-year-old journalist and presenter took part in the Channel 4 baking show alongside Ovie Soko, Russell Howard and Jenny Eclair to present his baked treats to Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

GBBO returned tonight to help raise money for Stand Up To Cancer, a national fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.

Ever since the project launched in 2012 it has raised £62million for projects and trials involving 11,000 cancer patients around the country.

In between baking tonight, Louis opened up about losing a family members from cancer.

He said: "I've had family members who have experienced cancer. My aunt died from cancer.

"Listen, it's something that touches lots of people and the more that we can do to combat it and to support people who have it, then the better."

This evening, comedian Jenny was given the Star Baker apron after wowing with the Signature Bake, Technical Challenge and Showstopper.

As the programme aired tonight, Louis tweeted: "Omg. The presh. It’s all coming back. #GBBO."

He also tweeted excitedly about receiving a handshake from both judges and Noel Fielding.

He tweeted: "Three handshakes. THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE!! #GBBO."
