Louis Theroux announces new documentary Selling Sex months after filming in Nottingham

The mystery behind Louis Theroux's springtime visits to Nottingham last year, may finally be explained - as the Bafta-winning filmmaker announces the imminent arrival of his new BBC documentary, Selling Sex.

The investigative journalist and presenter was snapped twice taking a break from filming at coffee house and antiques shop Hopkinsons, in Station Street, last March.

He was seen again in May with his film crew near to Madhatters Tearoom in Kimberley.

Staff at both venues remained tight-lipped about what the star was up to.

But could we be about to find out?

Louis Therous popped into Hop's Coffee House and Bar, in Station Street, on Tuesday, March 19, with a small group, including a cameraman. In picture (l-r) Hop's manager Frazer Wilson, TV presenter Louis Theroux and Hop's manager April McCarthy (Hop's Coffee House and Bar)

Due to air on BBC Two, at 9pm, on Sunday, January 12, Selling Sex follows Louis as he returns to the UK to meet women legally providing sexual services, either to make a living or to supplement their income. They can potentially earn hundreds of pounds per hour.

Rather than the streets or in illegal brothels, these women sell sex from their own homes or hotels, utilizing technology to share photos, make bookings and vet potential clients - making the exchange more accessible and, according to some, safer than the illegal alternatives.

Speaking about the programme Louis says: “I’m always drawn to stories that involve ethical wrinkles - issues that are deeply felt, but are also divisive, and in which good-hearted people can come to opposite conclusions. The debate around selling sex is exactly that kind of story.

"What we ended up with was a very intimate look at three very individual women and the different paths that led them to this field of work. I found it revealing and thought-provoking to make - I hope viewers have the same experience. Mainly, I’d like to thank the women who so openly and honestly let me in to their lives and helped broaden my understanding of their lives and experiences.”

As to whether Nottingham makes an appearance, we'll have to wait until Sunday to see.
