Louis Saha explains why Sir Alex Ferguson decided to sign him for Manchester United

Louis Saha has explained the motives behind Manchester United’s decision to sign him from Fulham back in 2004.

The former France international was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson 17 years ago this month from Fulham — who United face in the Premier League this evening.

During his time at Craven Cottage, Saha featured 11 times against United and scored two goals, with both coming in a 3-2 loss on the opening day of the 2001/02 season.

Fast forward two-and-a-half years and Saha was being signed by United, and went on to bag 42 goals in 124 appearances across more than four seasons at Old Trafford.

Saha believed his performances against United in a Fulham shirt convinced Ferguson to sign him all those years ago, and explains why he never felt any pressure against what turned out to be his future club.

“I think it’s always a part [of the decision to buy] when you perform well against another side. This side see the best of you,” Saha told MUTV.

"Yes, it’s definitely an element. It’s strange. The reason why [I played well against United], I don’t know, but I felt like most of the time it was because I had nothing to lose.

“I was playing against the best squad, the best team, with the best history, so it’s normal if I fail. There was no pressure, so it was good fun.”
