Louis Rees-Zammit 'targeted by NFL' as Wales star catches attention of American football scouts

Wales wing Louis Rees-Zammit is reportedly on the radar of the NFL for a potential future switch to American football.

The 21-year-old wing is currently sidelined by an ankle injury sustained playing for Gloucester against Leicester Tigers on Christmas Eve.

But he continues to make headlines, with The Rugby Paper saying the 21-year-old wing is thought to be under contract until the end of next season, adding that his possible availability then “has pricked the attention of NFL scouts who are constantly looking for potential recruits”.

Rees-Zammit, who an NFL fan, is no stranger to the United States, having spent last summer at the Triple H Tackling Academy in Atlanta, working on his footwork, speed and strength.

And his pace alone — he’s been clocked at 10.73 metres per second — would explain why there was interest in him from America.

But he will likely have multiple options when his arrangement with Gloucester does end and changing sports would be a big call. You can read more about the Welsh superstar for the modern age here.

Former England international Christian Wade blazed a trail by switching to gridiron but he failed to make the Buffalo Bills’ regular-season roster and was released last year.

The 6ft 3in, 15st 1lb Rees-Zammit already has 22 caps and is being tipped for even bigger things ahead, with Austin Healey saying earlier this term: “Managed the right way he could be as good as David Campese.”

Those old enough to remember the Australia wing legend would regard that as some compliment.
