Loughton crash: Boy, 12, dead in hit-and-run crash outside Debden Park High School

A 12-year-old boy has died in a horror hit-and-run crash near a school today.

Police have launched a murder probe after the crash near to Debden Park High School in Loughton, Essex, at around 3.30pm.

The road remains closed in both directions and a large emergency services presence - reportedly including eight police cars - is still at the scene. It is unclear where the car involved currently is.

"We have launched a murder investigation following a fatal collision in Loughton earlier today. A 12-year-old boy has sadly died," a police spokesman said.

"We are appealing for help to find a silver Ford KA in connection with the collision this afternoon in Willingale Road.

"Please help as per below from roads policing Inspector. Please do not speculate about those who may be involved. We will update when we are able."

One anonymous dad, whose daughter was hit by the car, claimed: "A Ford Ka mounted the pavement behind her.

"Her friend was bounced onto the bonnet before another boy was hit very bad.

"The car drove off down the road and the police arrived quickly. My daughter is safe, but the wing mirror clipped my daughter. Her friend got thrown off the bonnet.

"It was awful to witness. Everyone is in shock."

There are other schools, including primary ones, in the area.

Another resident said: "We came home around 4pm and there were absolutely loads of people here.

"Not just police, ambulances and a helicopter that landed over there [field along Maddox Drive].

"There are less now but we haven’t heard any details."

Lucy Tant said: "There was an accident with several children at Debden High School being run over."

Loughton Town Councillor and former town Mayor, Stephen Murray, said: "This is very disturbing news to hear.

"Let's hope and pray for the very best outcomes when the picture clarifies."

Essex and Hertfordshire Air Ambulance has confirmed the service has treated "a number of patients" at the scene.

Essex Police tweeted: "We are currently at the scene of a serious collision on Willingale Road, Loughton.

"The road cannot be accessed from junctions on either side of Debden Park High School.

"Closure runs between Rookwood Ave and Audley Gardens.

"Please avoid the area where possible."

"We would urge people not to speculate on the circumstances or people involved. We must make sure our updates are accurate."

Debden Park High School serves more than 1,000 children aged between 11 and 18.
