Lough Derg RNLI rescues family of four after boat ran aground in Tipperary

A family of four, including two children, were rescued by Lough Derg RNLI after their boat ran aground.

The incident happened on Wednesday evening close to the Tipperary shore.

After receiving a call from Valentia Coast Guard, the Jean Spier lifeboat was launched at 5.53pm to assist the 32 foot cruiser.

Four crew were onboard, helm Eleanor Hooker, and Keith Brennan, Joe O’Donoghue and Doireann Kennedy.

The wind was north-easterly, force three with good visibility.

There was some confusion about the exact location of the boat but the crew quickly spotted the stricken vessel close to the Tipperary shore, off Parker’s Point.

Four people were onboard, two adults, a child and infant, all of whom were wearing lifejackets and were uninjured.

The RNLI had to make a cautious approach due to the rocky conditions, using navigation charts and depth soundings to guide the way.

They reached the cruiser at 6.10pm and a crew member went onboard to check the boat for damage.

A spokesperson said: "An RNLI crew member was transferred to the casualty boat and once he was satisfied the boat was not holed, set up for a tow.

"The lifeboat towed the vessel from the stern as rocks off the bow were visible above water.

"Once in safe water and with the assistance of the RNLI crew member on board, the skipper made sure all drives and the propeller were in good working order.

"The lifeboat accompanied the cruiser to Garrykennedy, the safest, closest harbour, where, at 7pm, an RNLI volunteer helped to secure the boat safely alongside the quay."

Jeremy Freeman, Deputy Launching Authority at Lough Derg RNLI advises boat owners to "ensure you study your charts and remain within the navigation channels."

The RNLI boat returned to station and was ready for service again by 7.30pm.
