Loud 'explosion' heard in Tameside after two cars set on fire

A loud 'explosion' was heard in Tameside after two cars were deliberately torched.

Emergency services were called to reports of two vehicles alight on Chapel Street, in Dukinfield.

The incident took place at around 1.45am on Wednesday morning (July 1).

There have been no reports of any injuries.

Greater Manchester Police said both blazes are being treated as arson.

No arrests have been made.

Residents in the area said they could hear a loud blast in the early hours of the morning.

One neighbour said: "We were woken by a loud explosion around 1.45am and a car was on fire."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police called to Chapel Street, Dukinfield at around 1.30am this morning (Wednesday, July 1, 2020) to a report of two cars on fire.

"Emergency services attended.

"No reports of injuries. It is being treated as arson and enquiries ongoing."

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 1.36am today to reports of a car fire on Chapel Street, Dukinfield.

“One fire engine from Stalybridge attended and on arrival crews found two cars well alight. Firefighters used one breathing apparatus and two hose reels to tackle the fire.

“Firefighters were on the scene for around 90 minutes.”
