Loud explosion heard as emergency services rushed to control flames

A loud explosion was heard as a fire broke out at a retail park in Ellesmere Port.

The blaze swept through two caravans and could be seen from nearby homes as the emergency services tried to contain the flames on Sunday, September 5.

One eye witness told the ECHO she heard a 'bang' coming from the motorhome site on Rossmore Road East before her husband rushed to check if there was anyone who needed help.

Lisa Mcnay said: "I live at the back on the Rossmore Estate and we heard a loud bang and first of all thought it was a firework as we get a lot of them, but then I looked out of my bedroom window and saw smoke and the flames so quickly rang through to emergency services.

"I wasn't sure if it was a car as from where we are it looked close to the road and then we were worried as it seemed close to the houses.

"My husband ran around in case someone needed help and I rang up to tell them there was a fire."

James Watkins was in his garden getting ready to take his dog for a walk when he heard the sound on the bang on Sunday.

James told the ECHO: "I went upstairs and looked out of my bedroom window to have a look if I could see anything and saw the smoke from the motor home place."

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "At around 9.50pm firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle fire on Rossmore Road East, Ellesmere Port.

"On arrival at the scene the crews found two caravans which were well alight.

"Two firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, used two hose reel jets and a 45mm main jet to tackle the fire.

"The crews then used a hose reel jet to dampen down the scene.

"Firefighters were detained at the scene for around 90 minutes."
