Loud bangs and smoke under Bristol pavement sees emergency services called to scene

The sound of loud bangs and the sight of smoke saw firefighters called to a Bristol street on Wednesday evening (June 16).

The alarm was sounded after what was believed to be an electric fire in Colston Street at around 8.22pm.

When crews arrived, however, there was no fire at the scene.

Avon and Somserset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Upon investigation, the issue was determined to be under the pavement and originating from an area of recently excavated electrical works.

"Crews determined that no fire was present, but the area had emitted loud bangs and smoke."

Avon and Somserset Police were also called to the scene, helping to control traffic around the incident.

The electricity company was also called out and said there was no cause for concern.

Other incidents attended by firefighters on Wednesday included a grass fire at the rear of Hengrove Leisure Centre, in the Promenade, Whitchurch Lane. It is thought the fire was started deliberately.

Crews were also called to what was reported to be a gas leak at Barclays bank in Broadmead. It is believed the smell was linked to roof works on an adjacent building.
