Loud bang as 'suspicious package' blown up and residents told to keep windows closed

Roads closed off by police after a "suspicious package" was found earlier this morning have reopened after bomb disposal units detonated the package.

A section of Pingwood Lane in Kirkby was closed off by police as bomb disposal teams arrived on the scene just after 11.20am.

Residents were told to keep windows closed amid the ongoing incident.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We can confirm that officers are in Kirkby after a suspect package was found this morning, Wednesday 10 March.

"At around 11.20am, officers were called to Anders Drive.

"A cordon is in place and we ask that residents in the area ensure their windows are closed.

"There is a road closure on Pingwood Lane, between Headbolt Lane and Shevington Lane."

The road has remained closed through the school rush-hour but was later reopened after bomb disposal teams blew up the package.

It has not yet been confirmed what the "suspicious package" was.

The bomb disposal team has also been seen on Valley Road in Fazakerley this evening with Valley Road cordoned off by police.

We have asked Merseyside Police for further comment the situation but they said they are not aware of any further incident reported.

Valley Road has now been reopened and and it's currently not known if the temporary closure was related to the 'suspect package' found in Kirkby earlier today.
