‘Loud alarm’ going off ‘for months’ at former fire station

An alarm has reportedly been blaring out 'for months' in West Kirby at all hours of the day.

The alarm, which is coming from the former West Kirby Fire Station, is “permanently” going off, according to a local worker who passes the site every day.

Posting on Twitter, the concerned resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “Someone needs to do something about the old fire station in West Kirby - there's a loud alarm going off inside permanently.

“[It] has been for months. I pass it twice a day to and from work since the bus stop moved while Bridge Road is out and have heard it at all hours.”

He added: “It bothers me each time I pass it as I’m sure no alarm is meant to be going off 24/7 and it means no one is attending the building - and that building is going to waste.”

When the ECHO visited the site this week, the alarm could be heard going off loudly.

The former fire station closed in 2016 and was replaced by a new one in Saughall Massie three years later.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said it sold the site in 2020 and no longer has any responsibility for the station, so it is unable to take any action.

Blueoak Estates has put in a planning application for 32 apartments at the site to Wirral Council, but the developer said it does not yet own the site.

It is unclear who the current owner of the former fire station is.

Blueoak’s proposal features three buildings which will range from three to four-and-a-half storeys in height.

Of the 32 homes, 20%, or six, will meet the criteria for affordable housing.

Wirral Council has not yet decided whether to accept or reject the proposal.
