Lotto scam letters asking 'winner' to keep prize secret circulating around Scotland

A warning was issued yesterday over an international postcode lottery scam.

In a bogus letter seized by Trading Standards, one Scots householder was congratulated on winning £915,950.

But the crooks behind the fake computer ballot draw are only after the supposed winner’s cash, by obtaining their bank details.

The official-looking letter purports to come from the European lottery, Spanish lotteries Loteria and El Gordo and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and America – which doesn’t exist.

The notification even asks for the “winner” to keep it a secret.

The fraudulent scheme was uncovered in Aberdeen, where a resident in Bridge of Don alerted Trading Standards.

Local manager Graeme Paton said: “It’s very likely other people in the city and across Scotland are getting these in the post.

“There’s no such competition. This is just a way of harvesting bank account numbers and other personal details whether as part of the claim or for ‘security reasons’.

"Winnings from a competition you have not entered should always be queried.”
