Lotto numbers win for Co Down student after stranger he helped gave him money for ticket

A student from Co Down has scooped £1,750 on the lotto with £2 a stranger gave him for helping her load rubbish into skips.

Liverpool John Moores undergraduate Daithí Corr is home in Newry for the summer.

And so far it's been a very lucky break for the 19-year-old.

He said a woman he helped at a recycling centre really put a smile on his face after having his first year at university cut short by Coronavirus.

The teenager told Belfast Live: "She had loads of bags of stuff to go into the skips so I went over and told her I would sort it for her.

"I lifted it all in and then when I was getting rid of the last bag she gave me £2 and set it on the skip and told me to buy a lottery ticket.

"I took it and put it into my pocket and then when I was going to the gym later on that day I made sure that I bought a lottery ticket with that £2."

The Newry lad said the lotto ticket rested in his wallet for three days before he checked the numbers on the app and then took it to a local shop to collect his winnings.

"She gave it to me on a Thursday and I bought the lottery ticket that day. I checked it on the Sunday," he explained.

That was when he realised he had won £1,750.

"I opened it and had money!" he said.

"I was just really happy because I needed the money for university and other things."

Despite his windfall, the student said he is a little bit devastated he didn't get one more number, as he'd have won a cool £4,000,000...

"That was so bad," he added.

But he said he is "very thankful" to the lady who repaid his help with a gesture that will make life that little bit easier at university next term.
