Lottery winner, 90, sues son for mismanaging her £209m jackpot

A 90-year-old lottery winner is suing her son and his financial advisers over claims they badly managed her money.

Gloria McKenzie won the £209m jackpot in her hometown of Zephyrhills, Florida, USA, in 2013 and asked her son, Scott McKenzie, to look after it for her.

But Mrs McKenzie - who was a mill worker who lived a humble life when she won the Powerball draw - soon began to grow suspicious.

She noticed the investments Gary and his advisers had made cost her tens of millions of dollars - but left her with pittance.

The lawsuit also says she was being charged $2million in fees and claims the advisors her son hired was underqualified.

It reads: "You don’t have to know anything more than a branch manager at a bank to come back with some significant returns."

Although the initial lawsuit was thrown out in February, lawyers for Mrs McKenzie introduced a second one in early March.

But her son's counterargument includes that she can't simply sue because she is unhappy that she did not get returns on the investments she made.

It says: "In hindsight, would like is not a proper basis for a lawsuit.

"Rather than pleading ultimate facts to support their claims, plaintiffs continue to pursue legal theories that are unsupported by the facts they alledge."

In a statement, Mr McKenzie says he is "deeply disappointed" by his mother's actions but will respect his family's privacy and not comment until after the case has been condluded.

It is unclear how much money Mrs McKenzie has left from her windfall.
