'Lots of practice': Tenpin bowler scores first perfect game in club's 38-year history

Ken Temme has achieved the dream in the tenpin bowling world — the perfect game.

He scored the first accredited perfect score in the history of the Bunbury Tenpin Bowl Centre which opened nearly 40 years ago.

For those whose forays to the land of tenpin bowling have been limited to primary school birthday parties and social club outings, achieving a perfect score sounds impossible.

Simply put, you have to get 12 consecutive strikes, knocking all pins down to the ground 12 times in a row.

Mr Temme said it felt "amazing".

"To be the first to do it in such a long time is a huge achievement," he said.

He said the secret of his success was simple.

"It’s just practice, lots and lots of practice, and follow through," he said.

The 24-year-old grew up with tenpin bowling in his blood.

His parents own and run Bunbury's tenpin bowling alley, he "grew up there" and now works there.

The league bowler said his parents were ecstatic at their son's bowling achievement and there were shouts and cheers when he made the 300-point score.

Once common in Australian suburbs and country towns, tenpin bowling alleys are becoming something of a rarity in regional Australia, Mr Temme said.

"There's been a lot that have shut down over the years," he said.

Despite the challenges of COVID-19, the Bunbury Tenpin Bowl Centre has remained strong with interest from juniors and a its competitive local league.

"It hasn't been as busy as we would like but it is picking up," Mr Temme said.
