The Hunter received a good soaking of rain overnight with initial readings of more than 50mm within 24 hours in some areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology's early information from various automatic rainfall measuring equipment gave readings of 18mm at Merewether, 69mm at Nobbys Head and 65mm at Broadmeadow.
At 8am Thursday, 52mm was recorded at Cessnock Airport in the 24 hours prior, 53mm at Wallsend, and 62mm at Waratah.
According to Hunter NSW State Emergency Service deputy zone commander Peter Green, most SES calls for assistance were in Sydney, with Hunter residents experiencing "a little bit of wind and lots of enjoyable rain".
"There were relatively few calls considering the amount of rain," he said, adding there were less than 30 calls in the wider Hunter area.
"It was within the capacity of the local units to deal with."
Mr Green said units had ceased all non-essential activity to ensure volunteers were safe and able to respond to calls for help when needed.
He said the weather forecast showed a fair bit of rain was likely to hang around for the next day or so, but that it wasn't looking like it would be too severe.
The NSW SES Hunter units are ready and waiting to assist any members of the public who may need them over the coming week and into the future.
