Lothians teenager gets microlight pilot licence aged 17, just after passing driving test

A teenager from Dalkeith has become one of the youngest people in the UK to earn a microlight pilot licence.

Aviation enthusiast Jordan Bathgate, 17, received his licence this weekend shortly after passing his driving test.

Jordan even made it a hat-trick by getting accepted into the University of West of Scotland to study aerononautical engineering.

He took the Civil Aviation Authority-approved test in  January at East of Scotland Microlights in East Fortune.

Earlier, Jordan became one of the youngest people to pilot the Quik microlight aircraft solo.

He had to complete dozens of hours of flight before gaining his licence to fly microlights.

His instructors said: "At last (after 8 weeks of CAA nonsense) Jordan Bathgate has got his pilot's licence - at the same time as he passed his driving test!

"And got a place at university to study aeronautical engineering. Very well done to Jordan - he's been a pleasure to have as a student pilot and we wish him every success in the future.

"Of course he'll be back regularly to fly his beloved Quik!"

Last year Jordan spoke to STV News about his plans for the future, after he completed his first solo flight at the airfield.

He said: "If opportunities come up I definitely will try and take them.

"Breaking records for the youngest pilot to travel to places, the longest distance, things like that.

"But I wouldn't go out searching for them, I think I'm quite content with the solo in this machine."
