Lothians COVID-19 figures: How things have changed in last week across the Edinburgh area

There's been a drop in the number of COVID-19 patients in Lothians area hospitals in the last week.

The latest Scottish Government figures reveal that, as of midnight on Friday, there were 197 people in hospital, with 20 people in intensive care units.

There are now 2324 confirmed cases overall in the Lothians area.

While we regularly report on the daily changes to these figures, a look at the numbers from last weekend show that we've seen a decrease in the number of patients in hospital across the seven day period but no real change to the number of intensive care patients.

Last Saturday (2 May) there were 258 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected COVID-19, but this has since dropped by 61.

As far as intensive care patients go the figure last Saturday was 15, and we've seen an increase of five.

Today's update revealed that there are 2324 confirmed cases and this is an increase of 259 on last Saturday's figure.

Across Scotland, it has been confirmed that 39 more people have died after testing positive for coronavirus, taking the number of people to have passed away from the virus to 1847.

There are now 13,305 confirmed cases throughout the country.

On Wednesday First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reported that the coronavirus death toll had fallen in Scotland for the first time since the outbreak began.

The weekly update from the National Records of Scotland showed that there were 523 registered deaths relating to COVID-19 between April 27 and May 3 – a decrease of 135 from the previous week.

There had been speculation that Prime Minister Boris Johnson would be relaxing some elements of lockdown from Monday, however it has since emerged that there's not likely to be any significant change.

Nicola Sturgeon extended lockdown in Scotland for three weeks, and has already indicated that the only change the Scottish Government is considering would be to the once a day exercise guideline, insisting there's a lot of work still to do to get the virus under control, and push the 'R number' showing the rate of infection further below one.

She has been reminding Scottish people that Boris Johnson's Sunday evening address may not apply to them as each of the UK's nations may move at a different pace.
