Lothians coronavirus figures latest, and how things have changed in the last week

The latest Lothians coronavirus figures reveal a further reduction in the number of patients in hospital and intensive care in the last week.

The Scottish Government revealed that, as of midnight on Friday, there were 162 COVID-19 patients in Lothian hospitals and 10 in intensive care units.

In comparison there were 193 in hospital last Saturday – with 11 people in ICU with confirmed or suspected coronavirus.

In the last week there have been another 110 confirmed positive tests, taking the total in Edinburgh and the Lothians to 2649.

On Wednesday, the latest National Records of Scotland statistics showed that the death rate across Scotland had fallen for the third consecutive week.

The publication revealed that there were 332 deaths linked to the virus between 11 and 17 May – 83 fewer than the previous week.

This meant that, as of 7 May, there had been a total of 3547 deaths registered across the country where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

However, while the number of deaths has fallen, the figures are still 33 per cent higher than the average number of deaths recorded on the same week in the last five years.

The following day, on Thursday, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon set out the Scottish Government's route map out of lockdown.

Four phases were set out, with the first set to be introduced this coming Thursday (28 May). As part of phase one some outdoor activities such as golf and tennis can resume, while people can meet with one other household outdoors and with social distancing in place.
