LOT airfare sale touts 50 percent off from Chicago to Poland

Aug. 26--LOT Polish Airlines said Wednesday that it is offering half a million plane tickets to Poland for "up to" 50 percent off.

It gave an example of a round-trip economy fare from Chicago to Krakow for $649 in early December, a route that can cost more than $1,000 depending on departure and return dates, according to fares available Wednesday.

The sale applies to all classes of service from Chicago and New York's JFK Airport for travel from Dec. 1 to June 30, with blackout dates around Christmas and Easter. Other restrictions apply.

Airline fare sales are common, although half off is unusual. And airline competitors could decide to match the sale prices.

A LOT spokeswoman said the discount is on the base fare before adding hefty taxes and fuel charges that can add hundreds of dollars to international fares. Discounts will vary by market and with demand, she said.

LOT recently announced it was beefing up its routes to Poland from Chicago, which is said to have the largest Polish population outside Warsaw, Poland. For the winter season, it added two flights each from Chicago and New York to Warsaw.

LOT uses Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, known for customer-pleasing features, on its long-haul routes, including from Chicago.
