Lost world of Southport's magical River Caves remembered

It was known as a 'dark ride' where generations of nervous teenagers enjoyed their fist kiss.

For decades Southport's Pleasureland was synonymous with the River Caves ride which took visitors on a 893 feet journey into a version of the past, complete with dinosaurs and Egyptian tombs.

The ride became a mainstay at Pleasureland for decades, capturing the imagination of courting couples and day trippers alike.

Originally built in 1908 on the site of Southport’s first funfair, the White City, the River Caves were moved to Pleasureland in 1922.

The ride propelled 10 boats of six people through a fantasy world, made mostly of paper mache models .

A lovely home movie, released to the Southport Visiter several years ago, provided a glimpse of the ride's heyday.

Norman Wallis, owner of Southport Pleasureland, recently spoke to the ECHO about the River Caves.

He said: "The River Caves were a famous attraction at Southport, but their golden years were a long time ago.

"The ride was very influential. I understand Southport's River Caves inspired the world famous Small World attraction at Disney World.

"Part of the magic of the River Caves was the water - people love things to do with water - it's just very appealing.

"But the truth is that the River Caves became lacklustre in recent decades and after attacks by vandals it was time for them to go.

"However, I can reveal that I am working on exciting plans to bring a new water based ride to Pleasureland."

Mr Wallis also discussed the coronavirus pandemic which has forced his business, like so many others, to close.

"I refuse to feel sorry for myself. My family ran fairgrounds during World War Two and my uncle was an fireman who saw terrible things during the blitz.

"We will re-open when safe to do so. We will be back."
